Why Solar, Battery and EV Installs Need a Level 2 Electrician

A Level 2 electrician is an electrician who holds ASP (Accredited Service Provider) accreditation on top of a standard unrestricted electrical licence, giving them legal authority to work on the network side of your property, consumer mains, service lines, meters and network protection devices. A standard electrician, even a fully licensed solar installer, cannot legally touch that side of the job. On the Northern Beaches, that authorisation has to come from Ausgrid, and it's what allows us to energise a new solar system, connect a battery, upgrade a switchboard for an EV charger, or scale a system up for a commercial solar install, all without bringing in a separate contractor.

Level 2 Service Classifications, and Where They Show Up in a Solar or EV Job

Level 2 ASP work is split into four classes, 2A through 2D, and it's worth knowing which one applies to your project, because it's usually the deciding factor in cost and timeframe.


Class 2A covers disconnecting and reconnecting your property from the network. This comes up on solar and EV jobs when:


  • A commercial solar install needs the site switched from single phase to three phase supply
  • A major switchboard upgrade for an EV charger requires a temporary disconnection
  • A renovation moves the point of attachment before a solar system goes in
  • An existing connection needs to be safely isolated before new equipment is energised


Class 2B covers underground service conductors, the cable and conduit work between the network and your property. This matters for larger commercial solar installs or battery setups where additional underground cabling is needed, and on the Northern Beaches it comes with the added complexity of sandy, shifting soils and, on some headland sites, rock excavation.


Class 2C covers overhead service lines and private power poles. If a private pole is degraded or under-rated for a bigger commercial solar or EV load, this is the class that covers replacing or upgrading it, and salt air corrosion means poles here often need attention sooner than an inland property would.


Class 2D covers metering, service protection devices and switchboards, and it's the class most solar, battery and EV jobs actually run into. Solar and battery systems need correctly rated metering to export and import properly, and EV chargers almost always need a switchboard assessed and often upgraded before they can be installed safely. A switchboard upgrade on the Northern Beaches typically runs from $2,200 to $4,500+ depending on scope and the condition of what's already there.


Most real jobs draw on more than one class at once, a new commercial solar connection might need 2B, 2D and 2A together, and because our team holds accreditation across all four, that doesn't mean multiple trades or multiple invoices.


When Level 2 Work Comes Up on a Solar, Battery or EV Project

There are a handful of moments where Level 2 work becomes necessary partway through a solar, battery or EV project, and it pays to know them in advance rather than discovering them mid-install:

  • Your property needs to move from single phase to three phase supply for a commercial solar system
  • An Ausgrid inspection flags a defect notice on your service line, meter or private pole during the assessment for your install

  • A private power pole needs replacing before it can carry the extra load of a larger system


Defect notices deserve a mention on their own, because they're the one that catches people out. If Ausgrid finds your consumer mains undersized or your switchboard non-compliant, that has to be resolved by an accredited Level 2 provider before your solar, battery or EV job can proceed, and before your supply gets isolated.
